Being an antipodean philistine I'm not sure of the details but I seem to
remember that Thanksgiving celebrates the survival of the first european
settlers in North America through a 'Trying' first year.

S'probably a bit like Moto-bi ownership.

Anyway, happy thanksgiving blokes & blokesses.

Dana: I also have a baracuda (all stock and for sale!) and can take some
digital photos of whatever pieces you need, in their original state of
assembly, which should answer any questions you may have...let me know if I
can help.

Michael - sorry your trip wasn't as good as you would have liked. I am
trying to plan a trip in the next few years to get there because I also
have a fondness for Spanish bikes, having built and ridden a pair of 175

I have pics of Barracudas, sprites etc. All of the original sales brochures
had a solid rod with one hole in each end. But I too have seen them both

Yes dear friends, the holiday madness is upon us once again.

In order to save you hours of worry over what to get those near and
dear to you let me suggest a copy of John Bradley's book "The Racing
Motorcycle: a technical guide for constructors, Volume 1". This is
sure to be a welcome gift for the technically-oriented motorcycle
enthusiast spouse, relative or friend. Each copy you order will also
make my holiday season a bit brighter, since I'm the North American
distributor for the book (and contact info to order a book from John
for those outside my area is on the website).

Details at:

www.eurospares.com/racebook.htm

Give the gift that keeps on giving - knowledge.

Cheers,

As of 24 November the number of recipients of my lists (regular and
digest) are:

benelli-motobi 21+6=27
lightweight-roadrace 46+10=56
suzuki-gs-twin 81+19=100
vintage-dirt 79+21=100
laverda 75+31=106
vintage-roadrace 97+38=135
mc-chassis-design 107+66=173

Reminders:

Recent bounces to the lists have been for the same old stuff:

1> posting from an address other than the one you signed up from.
These lists are "closed" and won't accept outside posts.

2> Use of reserved or command words in posts. I've got the lists
configured to look for messages where people are trying to sign on/off
to the lists etc but sending the message to the list instead of the
majordomo software. These then come to me, and not out to the lists.
One draw back of this is that the software gets a bit overzealous at
times, and if it sees the words: h*lp, s*ubscribe, s*b (or who at the
beginning of a line) in the subject or message body it will grab that
message and bounce it to me. Please try to word your messages to
avoid using those terms, or replace a character as I did above.

3> Cross posting hasn't been much of a problem of late. If you feel
the need to post to multiple lists, use an individual message
addressed to one list. This is a common request from all the list
owners/administrators for the lists that I'm on so it shouldn't seem
like a really obscure practice.

4> For sale/wanted ads. Everyone has been pretty good about not
spamming the lists, and has kept the ads short and fairly unobtrusive.
Thanks. If you have something for sale, please list the location of
the goods in the original message as there is a pretty widespread
international s*bscriber base for the lists. I've got no problem with
ads in moderation - I've even bought some of the stuff now and then.

5> Replying to persons instead of the list. In re #4, if you have
questions about the for sale stuff, please direct them to the person
who has the stuff for sale, not back to the lists. The same goes for
posts of "me too, I agree" etc messages

6> Trimming out quoted text. Again, most people are being pretty good
about this, but I still occasionally see a multiscreen message quoted
in a reply. This is OK if you need to insert a comment on the original
message every few lines, but if you are just posting a general comment
please pare the original message down as much as possible. This helps
keep the digests a bit more manageable for those who receive them.

6A>Included HTML code. I guess that some of you use a web browser to
do your email. The default seems to be to include both a plain text
version as well as an HTML code version of the text in each message.
Please figure out how to turn that off - it just clutters up the
digests and archives.

6B>Line length. Some of you seem to have your editors set up for a
256 -> infinite line length. My editor often truncates the lines,
losing some of your message, and I'm sure that others probably have a
similar problem. Try to set up for a 60-70 character wordwrap if you
can so we don't miss out on your comments.

7> Courtesy. Everyone has been very good about this, and I
appreciate it. There have been a few small exchanges that I think
were attributable to misunderstandings/lack of clarity in posts, but
they were resolved without resorting to flame wars. Do keep in mind
that the people on the lists are of various genders/sexual
orientations/nationalities/etc. I'd rather you erred on the side of
excessive "political correctness" (a term I find often used by those
who are trying to justify their own lack of civility) than otherwise.

8> Fund drives. Some lists conduct these on an annual basis. I
thought about this and decided it would be more trouble than benefit,
and hard to conduct equitably anyway. Instead I'm going to print up
some list t-shirts and sell those at a nominal markup (and we've
already had the design contest). I'm waiting on a quote for Paul's
shirt design to come in. When that arrives we'll probably need to
have Paul or anyone else who fancies themselves a graphics wiz to do a
little cleanup/modification on the design before sending it to be
printed.

9>Attachments. A few new people have tried sending graphics files to
the list, and they've bounced due to the large file size. Otherwise
it hasn't been a problem. What's with these "card for XXXXXX"
attachments? Can those be turned off?

10>majordomo commands. Just send a message to:
majordomo@list.sirius.com saying "h#lp" (but spelling the word
properly) and you'll get back a list of commands. I've also got
sample uns&b/s&b commands on the website.

If you are going to be gone for the holidays or an extended period any
other time, please uns&b before you go if it is likely that your
mailbox is going to overflow and your ISP is going to start bouncing
messages back. Also, some of you have servers that seem to go down
frequently - if I see bounces on your messages for more than a couple
of days (I'm getting less tolerant and the # of days is getting
shorter) I'll take you off the list. There have been two people
recently on different lists that I've been getting bounce messages
back for days after I've removed them because of messages stuck in the
queue. If you know you have trouble with your local server you might
consider getting one of the free accounts from hotmail, yahoo, etc for
your list traffic (but don't forget to check it so that account
doesn't overflow too).

Don't forget that you can either request backdigests from majordomo
when you sign back on to the list or find them on the website (very
current for the chassis list thanks to Bob Schnick, less so for the
other lists that depend upon me to collate the archives).

I'm running 7 different lists so anything you can do to ease the
number of bounces/admin messages I have to deal with is appreciated.

If you've got questions please feel free to drop me a note and I'll
try to sort out your problem before it gets to be a bigger problem.

Thanks for making the lists the success they are.

Hello Dana,

The first 250 cc production Benelli-Motobi was produced in 1966. Till 1965
they only made 125 cc, 175 cc and 200 cc engines.
The Baracuda is a 250 cc model. As the German importer and tuner me told,
the factory had problems with the gasket of the cylinder head. A 250 cc is
bored up with 74 mm to the bolds. In 1965 they had the solution: no gasket,
only steel to steel and a rubber ring for closing the holes of the push
rods. This rubber sealing gives mostly leakage after a couple of years.

Another problem was the clutch. Instead of 5 disc, the 250 got 6 and a halve
thinner plates.

Greetings,

Peter

Hello Dana,

The bracket for the exhaust for the Barracuda is a thin pipe about 14 mm.
The ones with hole were for the Sport models till 1965.
You will get a picture on your own e-mail, because pictures will not come
over this list ( Michael told me).

Cheep price is....

no rim or backing plate needed either....The item that needs to be in

I have to admit I know next to nothing about the technical merits or

anyone has a manual or even a list of basic specifications I consider
myself a good enough meckanic to probably be able to work most of it out

Hoping to have a jolly time chating to other like minded souls.

Congrats on getting a relatively low mileage original bike (and on

I guess one of the next tasks when I find the time will be to put
together a rudimentary list of specifications for my MotoBi page on
the website.

Has anyone else seen a special frame on a MotoBi that isn't
documented on the website? We've got the two dirt track frames that
Jon sent me pictures of, and there was the 500cc Maltry-twin frame.
I haven't seen anything else but stock sheet-metal frames with the
Zanzani tubular bracing added. It seems to me that with MotoBi's
being raced successfully for some 15 or so years there must have
been someone who was convinced they had a better idea that built a
frame for the bikes.

On a similar note, there was a Sei-powered special entered by
Motobecane in the Bol d'Or one year that had a trick frame, spun
aluminum wheels, beautiful streamlining etc. I've yet to see a good
picture of the bike that really shows the frame details and would be
interested in seeing it if someone has a photo.

Moto Martin built frames for the CBX Honda - did they build a frame
for the Sei too? Since the motormounts on the Sei are identical to a
550 Honda (or so I've been told) I wonder if one was ever put into a
racing frame that had been made for the Honda.

I've been told that there is an unique Martin-Benelli Sei on the road. This
is a friend of mine, from the french CBX club, who told me that. He knows
very well Georges Martin and he is interested by Benellis too. But I don't
know who owns it.

It's an '84 654 Sport, and it's in great shape!

For the rest of the list, we're expat British folks living in The
Netherlands.

My main bike is a Jota, and my missus Janice has the 654.

At the start of the year we rebuilt the engine to better than new
specification; new bearings, chains, pistons, everything it needed!

We had the cam and rockers reprofiled by Megacycle (via Michael)
and souced some parts through Ron's Italian Classics in Holland
and some through Speedscene in the UK.

The results were fantastic; the improvement in the mid-range
(where Janice needs it) is better than anything I could have
hoped for!

>Did you get some big

Not at the moment, but I have a spare cylinder head that our
tame genius is going to play with through the winter (the bike
will be off the road until March) so once he gets going on that
I'll be after advice again!!

However with the stock small valves the bike is so good in the
mid range I'm going to be very careful not to lose that.

One *very* strange thing turned up during the rebuild... it had
3 24mm carbs and one 26mm carb!!

Hi,

I'm aware of Speedscene (they provided me with some parts for my 750 Sei)
but not of Italian Classics. Can you let me know the address, phone and fax
? Do they provide parts for the 750 Sei ? Do they speak english or french ?

In addition, I may have an opportunity to buy a cylinder head for the 750
Sei including Megacycle cams. Any comments about these ? Do they improve
the 750 behaviour ? Is there a mechanical risk to put these cams ? What
about the hardening quality of the cams ? I was told that this can be a
weak point of the Megacycle camshafts sometime.

By the way, do some of you know Enrique Martinez Santamaria from Spain ? He
is a good friend of mine, member of the french CBX club, and he is crazy
about six-cylinder machines. He collected nearly all the Benelli/Motobi
around Spain, and he has right now 12 (twelve !) Benelli 750 Sei in his
garage, in various shape from total wreck to showroom machine. He has not
an e-mail but he speaks a good english and you can reach him at his office.
I don't have his phone number here but I'll let it know to the individuals
who would like to get in touch with him.

All the best,

- - Jerome.

Ron runs this business part-time; he's the sales manager for the
folks who import Metzeler so that keeps him busy!!

He does most of his trade locally, but you should be able to fax
him on (this is from memory so I'll check it!!) 00-31-297-284357.
If you get no joy you can contact him through me; I'll pass on any
requests.

There was a GREAT improvement in the midrange (4000-6000) on the
654. The 750 motor is a similar design, I'd expect similar
improvements.

> Is there a mechanical risk to put these cams ? What

Megacycle actually welded and ground our cam twice; the problem
was that the original material was not the best quality and
cracked the first time around - not Megacycle's fault. The end
result looks like a very fine job.

The engine has only run a couple of months, and so time will
tell how good the components are.

So, at the moment I could say I strongly recommend Megacycle
on their profile, which seems to work well, their service,
the work was done in good time, and their price, which even
though it was higher than expected due to the extra work (they
warned us this might happen) it was cheaper than any other
performance item we could track down. Only a second hand cam
would have been cheaper.

I'll keep you posted about the reliability of the components!

>By the way, do some of you know Enrique Martinez Santamaria from Spain ?

I'm afraid not! He sounds like an interesting character though.

Hello Jerome,

Please ask your friend to ask M. Martin if he could supply for the
web site any pictures of the different bikes he's built - I don't
have much info on his frames.

Hello Michael,

I have at home a Martin catalog, including pictures of various frames, i.e.
for the CBX, the GSX, the Bol d'Or, the GPZ, etc... I'll try to find some
free-time to scan some of them and send them to you. I also have a color
advertisement of the Mocheck Martin made in the UK, for the CBX. Nice picture.

Georges Martin is not anymore building frames for motorcycles. Actually, he
even destroyed some of his unsold frames before shifting to car tuning...
I'm afraid there is little hope to get something directly from him. But
I'll get in touch again with my friend who told me about the Martin-Sei,
and he may have a picture of it.

You can already have a look to the web page of Dave Hartner, a member of
the International CBX Owner Association, who posted some pictures of
special CBXs, including a picture of the Mocheck Martin that I provided to
him. It is at :

cbx.iperweb.com

And you should look at the "Project Bike" page.

Keep in touch. All the best,

- - Jerome.

Hello Jon,

No need to shout (all caps) we're as close as our monitors to you.

I'll stick up a picture of the frame concept soon. It is very much
like the Linto in side view, though I run a couple of tubes
differently. Of course, the MotoBi doesn't have the engine mounts in
the same place as the Linto which makes things a little less "pure"
in the design than I'd like, but I'm sure it will still be way
stronger than needed.

Glad to hear you got back on line - hope you enjoyed plowing through
all the messages. I doubt I'll be at Daytona, unless the Zanzanis
take me up on my offer to ride for them, presuming they are looking
for a steady mid to upper mid-pack rider.

Other than getting to spend some time with the English chassis
designer/builder Tony Foale, the trip to Spain was about a 4 on a 10
point scale. We had our rental car broken into and some bags stolen
on about day 5 (of 14) and Carleen got food poisoning in Granada
towards the end of the trip. I can't say I'm wild about spending ~24
hours in airports or on airplanes either. Let's just say I'm in no
hurry to go back.

Didn't see any Benellis or MotoBis while I was there either. Did
spot one Sanglas 500cc single though.

Cheers,
Michael

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the info. I'll get in touch with Paul by fax soon. I'll be
careful about day-time, the situation is the same on my side : three little
kids who are generally asleep when people call...

All the best,

Subject: Ben/MotoBi MotoBi valve springs and heads

I was looking at a stock 250 head tonight and a rough check with some
calipers makes it look like the stock valve springs only allow about
.350" of travel before coil bind (when installed).

Anyone installing a hotrod cam with more lift might want to check
very closely to make sure they have enough clearance to avoid coil
bind or smashing the retainer into the top of the valve guide.

When you consider that a Ducati 250 offers about .358" of lift with a
stock cam and the race cams offer up to .440" of lift it would appear
that a fair bit of attention would need to be paid to the valve
springs and related components on a MotoBi.

Also, I've noticed that the MotoBi and Aermacchi racers don't seem to
have the carbs mounted at much of a downdraft angle in re the intake
port. If you weld inside the rocker box above the port and outside
of the intake valve spring it looks to me the whole port could be
shifted "up" (presuming we look at the head in a vertical way instead
of as installed) a noticeable amount, which would probably pay some
benefits in flow.

If you look at pictures of the Guzzi 250/350 Bialbero GP bikes you'll
see they have a lot more downdraft in the port.

Cheers,
Michael

Subject: Ben/MotoBi The crate has arrived

The crate of six MotoBi engines was fork-lifted into the back
of my van this afternoon. Bob's very sturdy crate arrived undamaged,
so I'm presuming everything is OK inside.

I probably won't get a chance to open it and look inside until next
weekend. I'll have to figure out where I'll be able to store them,
as my garage is pretty crowded but my storage garage is pretty damp,
and I want the engines to stay in good shape.

I've started doing some concept sketches for the RR frame (Jon, I've
been using the picture of your 200 racer in Corel Photopaint - makes
starting over very easy and saves the bother of drawing all the
bits). What I have in mind is a replica of the frame used on the
Linto 500GP, though the upper engine mounts on the MotoBi aren't
being very cooperative about being elegantly incorporated into the
design.

Cheers,
Michael

How is Janice's 500 Quattro coming along? Did you get some big

A guy I know has a Sei engine in a CB750 Honda chassis (with Honda
sidecovers on the engine). The engine has electronic ignition.

Were there versions of the Sei that came from the factory with
electronic ignition? I think I read that the 900 Sei did, but I
really don't know for sure. Bob isn't even sure if he has a 750 or
900.

Anyway, Bob is having trouble that he thinks is ignition related, and
I'll try to take a look at it for him this Sunday when I see him. If
anyone knows of some common problems with the OEM ignition please let
me know so I'll have something specific to look at.

FYI, we're up to 26 people s&bscribed (notice how I put a character
into that word so the majordomo software doesn't think it is a
request from somebody to s&bscribe to the list, which would cause the
message to be rejected and sent to me to resolve), which seems pretty
decent to me for only being up for about 3 weeks.

I'd guess that after a couple more weeks and people letting other
people know about the list we'll be up about 35-40 people, which
should see a fair amount of traffic on the list.

Hello Peter,

I just visited the MotoBi site again - I think you've added some
stuff since last I was there. I'll look forward to an English
version of the site!

Could you rescan to a larger size and send me a copy of the "ghosted"

Greetings all,
Just got an e-mail from Paolo Fontana of the "Registro Storico Benelli"
This is a group listed on the Benelli site that is interested in the
preservation and documentation of Benelli and Motobi motorcycles. I've
asked Paolo for information on serial numbers and any other information.
He's asked for photo's of my bike in exchange. He was interested in the
e-mail mailing list and I sent him Micheal's address at eurospares. I'll
keep everyone posted.

A frind of mine is a committee of the Benelli Club Netherlands. He owns a
Sei and two "eggs". He knows a lot of the Sei, has the Benelli archive, is
manager of Technical Books etc. He has a computer, about a couple of month
he will be in the air. Now you can reache him by fax.

His name is Paul Hendricksen, fax: 0316-528638 (also telefone number)
Please think with faxing to him to normal day-time in the Netherlands,
because his phone rings and he has little children.

You can find his name and addres also on the web: www.benelli.club.tip.nl/

Every body who wants to know more about the "eggs" of MotoBI and Benelli has
to go to www.motobi.club.tip.nl/
Both pages are mine and when the winter will be very cold, I'll add some
English text to them.

Hello Dana,

The first Benelli Barracuda was offered in 1968 by Cosmopolitan. It was an
normal 250 cc Benelli Sprite but for the American market a bigger seat and
higher handlebars. Especial for this engine ther was a tuning kit.
More about that motorcycle you can read in Cycle World, september 1968.
I think a lot of Benelli fans in the USA will help you.

Greetings,

Hello Benelli-addicts !

I'm new on this list so I don't know how many of you are around, who owns
what, etc... So a short introduction to myself, my motorcycles, and my aims
with respect to the list.

I'm 34-yr old, I work as a research scientist in France, and I ride
motorcycles since I am 16. After owning various bikes, I fell in love with
a Triumph Bonneville 14 years ago, that I still own today, with about
100,000 km at the clock. Three years ago, I had enough money to afford a
second bike, and my choice has been for an old dream, a Honda 1000 CBX
six-cylinder. I was so enthusiastic about that bike, its sound and its
character that I decided to become a member of the french CBX club, of the
International CBX Owner Association, and I became the secretary of the
french club, in particular in charge of editing the club bulletin. 2.5
years ago, I also initiated an e-mail forum for the CBX, which is now
managed by an american friend. My love for the six-cylinder machines made
me look over the last 10 years for a Benelli 750 Sei, the very first
six-cylinder ever produced. Last June, I've been lucky enough to find one
in Italy, in perfect shape, with 22000 km at the clock, and for an absolute
bargain price...

So now I also enjoy the very specific harmonics of the Sei, through quite
empty Busso 6/6 exhausts. I've been looking for information about that
bike, dealers, owners, clubs, e-mail list, and I'm quite happy to discover
this one for the Benelli-Motobi. My hope is that it will allow me to meet
other owners of a Benelli Sei (750 or 900), to discuss about tips, parts,
etc...

That is all for now. If one of you wants to receive a jpeg picture of my
750 Sei, just let me know and I'll send one directly to you.

With my Benelli greetings,

- - Jerome.

Hello Peter,

I guess I'd better get out my marking pen and put "road race only" on
that engine.

BTW, I just had a call from the customs broker. He'll be emailing me
the total charges soon, and I should be able to go and pick up the
crate Friday afternoon after work.

That is encouraging - I can deal with crankshaft stroke and bigger
pistons as long as everything else is the same.

Well, shucks, that's no fun. I'm sorry to hear of your problem,
though glad that if you had to sell the racer at least you found a
good home for it.

I hope you are able to recover enough for at least an occasional
outing.

Best wishes,

Hello Doug,

Be sure to check out the list of articles I've got on my MotoBi page
- - I've found a moderate number of them so far.

The Zanzanis said they'd be able to supply a race cam, though I'd
imagine that will be an all-out RR cam. They didn't give me any
details of the timing/lift.

Dear Michael

you or any others of the list members can call Joe Bongart at 1 800 523 2522
to find out about specs

I HAVE GREAT NEWS..........The great Primo Zanzani is coming back to America
to race. After 33 years he will come back with his son Athos and mechanics and
3 Motobi 250's to be campaigned in Daytona, & maybe Georgia at the AHRMA
races. Two Americans may be chosen to race these bikes. One may be Kurt
Leibmann who campaigned the Motobi for Zanzani the last time the Motobi's
raced. Cosmopolitan Motors will help the Zanzani's as they did before. The
Zanzani's make some "world class" brake rotors and other race components and
decided to race to publicize their products (at least thats the excuse)

Zanzani and the bikes should arrive in Feb.

Hello Peter,

Would this 250 be the type with the stronger cases that you've
mentioned before? Maybe that would be the engine to base the road
racer on.

Hmmm, sounds like lots more 125s in the shipment than I thought I
was getting - I really wanted 250s. Would I be correct in presuming
that all the major castings and transmission/primary gears are the
same between the 250 and 125 engines, so that I could, with some
machining and parts replacing, convert the 125s into 250s?

Thanks again for sharing your specialist information.

Are you going to be racing your MotoBi next year in Holland?

FYI - Bob Eldridge told me:

"As I have found - the dipsticks break, possibly due to age. Either
the plastic screw top or the dipstick (metal) comes away, so please
do not run the motors with the metal sticks in, only the plastic
tops."

Something to think about.

A hardened rod, placed in the oil hole, that sticks out a little for the
puller to bear against might work. I don't know the dia of the hole but it
would need to be at least 1/4'' to avoid getting the rod stuck.

Man, that first sentence shows what kind of grades I got in English.

The "Mojave" 360 is a "dual" street/dirt-style that uses the "new"frame
design that copies the Tornado 650 frame. It was sold by MonkeyWards and
Benelli dealers. M/W also sold a "Mojave" 250 which used the old style
frame of forgings and tubing with additional bracing (when compared to the
Benelli 175 roadster from which it was descended ). The electric
components are a mix of Bosch and CEV. The suspension parts are Cerini.
There is a batt/gen switch on the headlight bucket for "dead" battery
starts. The real prob with these machines is the short throw of the kick
start lever. It allows only a half revolution of the motor. The carbs
tend to the rich side and are real easy to flood. Otherwise it is a solid
unpretentious machine. My 250 Benelli/Motobi is quicker and more nimble.

I think the 360 "Mojave" should have a one piece body/seat pan and rear
fender combo. BTW, the 250 "Mojave" uses the same tank and paint scheme as
the Motobi/Benelli's. My 250 "Mojave" is factory black and silver tank with
black and white pinstriping on the fenders. It has 409 original miles. I
have seen two paint schemes for the 360 Mojave....Yellow tank and fenders
with silver frame or deep red tank and fenders and black frame.

I just got a note from Dirk W., who had a 175 or 200 that he raced
with AFM back in the early/mid 1960s. I've been meaning to pay him a
visit and look at some of the pictures he has - he's about 45 minutes
or so north (into the now-snowy Sierras) from where my friend Craig
is in Chico CA.

Dirk mentioned in his note:

So now we know that one of them made it to the West Coast - I wonder
where it is now (if it still exists)?

hello all,

Just to add some information, I have copies from Cycle magazine for road
tests of the 200 and 250 Sprite, the 250 Barracuda scrambler, and copy from
Walnecks from Cycle for the 250 Barracuda road with sport kit. I also have
an original owners manual for 125-250 that I purchased from Cosmo years ago.
I don't know if Cosmo still has these available. Cosmo does have
photocopied parts books available.

I would like to find out more info on my 250 barracuda scrambler. The
serial number on the frame and engine is *100968*. It is a 4 speed. Built
in 1967 I think. I haven't heard of anyone else owning one of the
scramblers.

I'm in the process of rebuilding it into a road style, though I still will
keep the old scrambler parts.

Let me know if anyone wants copies of the road tests.

I definately would be interested in any leads on any "sportcams" that are
available.

Thanks

Hello Doug,

A good friend of mine spent some time trying to turn a 360 into a
vintage road racer, but eventually gave up and built a Superhawk
instead. The 360 is kind of big and bulky, and the 4 speed
transmission wasn't a big plus for a road racer.

I think they were in a fairly mild state of tune, so would probably
be reasonably reliable if left stock. I think Cosmo has a fair store
of parts for the vertical singles.

If the price is right, then why not?

Cheers,
Michael

As usualy I'm short on details, but I think I remember hearing of a
Benelli Mojave which was pretty rare, but it was also sold by
Montgomery Ward (was it the Riverside?) in large enough quantities to
have been almost as common as dirt. I think Sears bikes were Gileras
for a while.

I have excellent photocopy of Benelli 360 Montgomery Ward Mojave test
report. Need it? I can scan it. It has a really funky seat/rear
fender. Looks a lot like a Rickman or Ossa Stiletto

I also have a CYCLE road test for the 250 cc Barracuda (August 1967)

Yes, the vertical cylinder Benellis were sold by M-W. Sears had the
Puch twingles and small Gilera singles.

Hello Phil,

The Mojave was very much styled along the lines of a Rickman
dirtbike. However, I think it weighed substantially more than a 650
Triumph Rickman.

How did you "break" it - what was the failure mode?

Weight of the Mojave 360 Tourer is 297 Lbs. Not bad.

I also have a copy of a test ride of a Benelli 250 Barracuda Metisse. It is a machine with the
horizontal engine, sqaure tubeless monoframe, and the tank/seat arrangement of the Mojave.
(Upswept pipe too) Very strange beast to say the least!

I used a traditional "gear puller" from a diesel truck repair shop in town. The two broad jaws
fit under the gear, and a securing collar slid dow over the arms to lock the jaws in place. The
center tension screw of the puller was a pointed style, and the tip was essentially seated into
the oil delivery tube that is on the right side of the crank shaft. I guess I can't blame the
shaft for splitting, especially when a sharp "V" is driven into a very thin shaft wall. If I were
to do it all over, I would use as a minimum, a flat surface puller.

Hello Michael,

When I look into the Motobi Amici Register and to my own engines in the
European numbering I can tell about them:
>
>S*4124*
This is a 250 Sport Special Engine second type build in 1971

>*4135*
>*5805*
>*5719*
These three are 125 cc Imperiale build in 1967-1968

>*6676*G O BEN/S125
This one is a 125 cc Imperiale Super Sport, 1968 with lighter piston and
pin.

>43508

This number is not an Europian number, unless one digit is forgotten.
43 will say 4= 4stroke and 3 is the second series after the beginning 1
series. the following 4 numbers are the real engine numbers.
If it should be 433508, then it will be a Imperiale 125 cc about 1964-1965.
When the cilinder is made from cast iron it is a Lusso with low compression;
is it from alloy, it is a Sport or a Sport Special ( 1 : 8.8 with 10 hp at
8500 rpm or 1:9.5 with 14 hp at 9.500 rpm

>longer than the others.

Till 1965 all the engines and the frames had the same number and 6 digits.
The 2 Strokes first digit was a 5, and the 4-T began with a 4.
The second digit was for cc. Till 1965 was the numbering:
41.... and 43.... were for the 125 cc Imperiale
45.... were for the 175 cc Catria
47.... were for the Catria Sport and racers with ignation on the cam and for
the 200 cc Sprite in 1964 and 1965
In 1966 the 250 cc Sprite was introduced (Road Racer) and from that moment
the engines got another number than the frames. In Europ only the 125cc and
the 250 cc were sold. No letter or the" I " were for the 125 cc and S 125
was used. Further all the 250 cc got an " S " for the number. And all the
engines were 5 speed ( wider).
For the American market were used other numbers and also more types.

Hello Scott,

I'm going to need to place an order with Mistral for some more
ignition stuff pretty soon, and I'll see if I can get them to send me
some details on the remote race ignitions they used to supply for the
Honda and Kawasaki 4 cylinder engines. It would help if they'd tell
me the size belts/sprockets etc that they used.

It won't happen overnight, but maybe I'll get on a roll and start
getting some stuff done in the garage.

While I haven't gotten my crate of Benelli/MotoBi engines yet, I did
get a fax (a bit hard to read) with the serial numbers. They seem
to have a fair amount of variance, and I thought I'd post them in
case anyone could spot something *special* in them.

S*4124*
*4135*
*5805*
*5719*
*6676*G O BEN/S125

My understanding is I'm getting 4 250s and 2 125s, all of them 5
speed transmission models. I find it interesting how some of the
numbers have stars in them, others don't, and the one 125# is so much
longer than the others.

I'll have to inspect things closer when I get the engines - is there
an easy way to spot the difference between a 125, 175, 200, 250
engine from the outside? I thinking that cylinder heights might be
different, and the 125 intake port might be smaller. Then again, if
these are all 5 speed engines I guess it wouldn't be likely there
would be a 175 or 200 mixed in with them, since I think (correct me
if I'm wrong) those sizes were all 4 speed jobs.

Clue me in.

Michael,

My owners manual on the 200 CC 4 stroke 4 stud engine includes torque specs of:

Cyl head = 22 - 24 ft. Lb.

Flywheel Magneto nut = 55 - 60 ft. lb.

Countershaft sprocket nut = 65 ft. lb.

Primary shaft clutch hub lock nut = 45 - 50 ft. lb.

Cam gear = 45 - 50 ft lb.

Pinion gear = 40-45 ft. lb.

Note: From personal experience: Take extreme caution when removing the pinion drive gear from
the main crankshaft. Use a proper tool. It is on VERY TIGHT and must be taken off with the
proper tool. The crank shaft WILL break if a conventional gear puller is used. Believe me!! It
will happen!!

My understanding is the early Sei's have points, while the much later
ones (900s?) have a Bosch electronic, possibly the BTZ as used on
Laverdas. Do I have this correct?

I've had several people ask me about RITA ignitions for the Sei's.
They'd either have to be a triple-Hall ignition (a complete ignition
set for each pair of cylinders) retaining the mechanical advancer, or
a 1/2 speed remote mounted single pickup (a la Trident) that would do
the advance electronically.

3 complete sets of pickups/amplifiers vs a Trident kit and mounting
parts and 1/2 speed drive bits off the crank.

Neither of these would be inexpensive (easily $400 if it isn't too
complicated to do on the latter system).

I wouldn't mind looking into this a bit more (there is a Sei about
30 minutes away I could use to develop stuff) but it would only be
worth my time if there are enough Sei's being ridden who would want
a good ignition and wouldn't mind the non-stock appearance on
whichever side (RH?) of the engine the points reside.

I don't think we've got all that many people on the list yet, but I
know there are a few Sei owners. Any thoughts on this?

Cheers,
Michael

Hello Robert,

I had only one person request any XXL shirts. I can get some of them
done in that size, though I think I was told that the XXL shirts run
$1-2 more than the XL and smaller sizes.

Cheers,

I called Cosmo and requested import info on Benellis.......they said
they couldn't really help.

Does anyone have the production numbers for each year and model. In
particular.....the 1978 run of 500/4s. How about the total production
of 500/4s for all years?

Mike A

Its amazing how thin the information on Benelli motorcycles is.
Especially when compared to someone like Triumph. It seems that anyone
who knows anything about them can tell you production runs, frame and
engine #'s, import/export data ect.

Some HAS to have Benelli records somewhere......

(For you latecomers, the shirt designs appear at the bottom of the
first graphics page on the website.)

And the results of the great email list T-shirt design contest are:

(Designer, and number of votes for 1-5th place)
Paul Kellner == 19, 3, 2, 4, 1
Bruce Brown == 8, 13, 4, 1, 0
Ben Bennett ==  3, 5, 3, 1, 6
Jon Hose = = 2, 2, 4, 6, 3
Jeff Rozycki == 0, 3, 5, 6, 5

As you can see, some people voted for only one or two shirts.
32 ballots were received.

The predominant color for Paul's shirt (13) is black.
The predominant color for Bruce's shirt (7) is red.
Ben and Jeff's and Jon's would be white.

There looks to be about 30 people who'd take a copy of Paul's shirt,
and about 28 for Bruce's design.

One problem I see with Paul's design is the large number of colors -
at least 5 (that I can spot) if printed on a black shirt. Each color
needs a separate screen, driving the price of the shirts up. If the
flags at the top were eliminated it might be doable with 3 colors,
though someone who is a graphics wizard might have to go through and
adjust the colors a bit where different hues/shadings are present.
Personally, I'd drop the flags as I've got specific lists for Italian
and Japanese bikes, and the other lists cover a wide range of other
nationalities that I'd imagine people wouldn't want slighted.

Bruce's shirt would need extra screens if the pocket logo was
printed.

All shirts would need to be modified a bit to add the new
Benelli-MotoBi list to the list of names.

There does seem to be a preference for the shirt having a pocket.

Bruce's pocket logo has been mentioned by several people as being of
interest for bike-sized stickers with the list names being added on to
the design, so think a bit about how that might appeal to you.

I'm going to contact one of the list members who is in the screen
printing trade and see what adjustments he thinks Paul's design might
need to be printable, along with a price quote etc. Sizes look to be
about 15 each of XL and L, and 5 of M (presuming the printer might
have some need to do the sizes in units of 5).

As soon as I get some price/printing problems/timeframe information
back I'll let the lists know what the likely cost of the shirt with
shipping would be, and then do a solicitation for firm orders in
anticipation of having shirts printed.

I'm not sure if I did the intro bit on this list...but I'm Mike A (in
NJ).

I'm currently building a 500/4 Benelli "race" replica. What is that
exactly? Well...take a stock 78 500/4, strip it, graft on a 38mm Marz.
dual disk front end, aluminum tank and seat (see Evan Wilcox homepage
for sheetmetal picts), full fairing, 4 into 4 hand made magni pipes,
clip-ons, rearsets, paint it in the (Kel Carruthers/ Renzo Pasolini)
Benelli Green and Silver color scheme. Have some engine work done to
increase valve size, bore it out +.050, add a longer duration cam, 31mm
Kie'hin carbs, cut the flywheel from 22 to 12 lbs...add an "ala Mike
Moore" Lucas Rita Ignition. (FYI: Craig Hanson is handling the engine
work for me out in Chico CA)

What do you get? The worlds most expensive, Benelli 500/4, which looks
like a dual disk, late 60's racer, with ~60 RWHP. Is it done?
Not yet......expect it to run in early spring!!!! Should be fun, eh?

Or, to take the cynics side, a CB500/4 made up to look like a Benelli.

You must realize that it took alot of work on Benelli's part to properly
bodge, an essentially good Honda design. In all seriousness....its
still a Benelli.....and quite a reliable one at that. Esp. when
compared to the 750 & 900 /6s. Each cyl layout is the same as the Honda
125 design.

Is the Sei engine basically a 500/4 with two extra cylinders and the

Yes, Its 6 125cc honda cylinders..the alternator is chain driven to the
rear of the cylinders to cut down on the width of the bike. Reliability
issue pertain to crank failures.

I was wrong. The Tornado write up is in "The Classic MotorCycle", September
1998.
I have a copy on my desk now. If the mag is hard to get hold of, I can
photocopy it
and fax it to anyone who wants a copy - unless that gets me into deep do-do
with the
publishers. I don't think the photos will come out very well, as most of then
are kinda
dark.. It also has details of where to get a copy of the workshop manual (15
UK pounds)
and an instruction book (8 UK pounds if you don't speak/read Italian, 6 if
you do). That
is from the mag's UK address. I am sure that Cosmopolitan Motors could also
assist
with the same publications in the US... (1-800-523-2522 for anyone who
doesn't know).

Does anyone know of any other Benelli suppliers besides Cosmo? I've
needed a few common replacement parts and Cosmo was out of them, I
don't think there'll be any new shipments from the factory for a
while. My oil sight glass (plastic actually) cracked, neither the
glass or the primary drive gasket was available. I needed to take the
primary drive cover off because when I saw the crack I poked the glass
with my finger to make sure it was a crack and a few bits of plastic
fell in. Doh! I couldn't find any gasket paper big enough, so I cut a
gasket out of a paper grocery bag, it seems to work ok, but I haven't
ridden it much since some friends hauled it up to my (second floor)
bedroom while I was away.

Any Tornado fans that have never seen the primary drive should take a
look if you have the chance, it's an incredibly beefy setup, and has
an oil feed pipe pointing right into where the crank and clutch gears
mesh. I'm mostly a British bike fan, or at least I work on British
bikes more than any other type, but I can't deny that the Italians
definately had a good piece of engineering. This must have been a
pretty expensive bike when it was new.

In the UK, the best source is Speedscene - who bought up all the Benelli
importer
stock - Phone +44 1 484 543337. I know that coz I live in Oregon.

In '72 (hence the topic of teenage conversation), the list price was 820 UK
pounds.
A Bonneville was 500 UKP and a Honda 500/4 was 700 UKP.

I'd say that's commensurate with the mechanical quality of the
machine, with a bit of scaling for the quantity of CB500/4's built
vs. the number of Tornados built (does anyone know how many were
actually built?).

I think the finish of the bike, such as the paint and chrome, leave a
lot to be desired. I guess the Italians just used cheap paint and
chrome back then. Most of the chrome on my bike (~6000 miles from
new) is in pretty rough shape, and the paint has peeled in a lot of
places where there's no chance it could have gotten scratched.
Definately not on par with British stove enamel.

I got a NOS tank from Cosmo when I first got the bike a few years ago,
there were spots on the bottom of the tank that the paint had missed
entirely, there were fingerprints good enough to identify the painter
on the tank, and the paint quality was about as good as I could do in
a dirty basement with a JC Whitney spray gun. But, at $150 for a new
tank (all I needed to make a $50 Tornado complete) I couldn't
complain. If anyone disparages the paint I'll tell them it may be
ugly but at least it's original.

Hi Steve,
I would send you the money for postage and handling if you would make a
photo-copy of the Benelli article. Classic Motorcycle is't available around
here that I have found.
If anyone wants copies of the Tornado Service, parts, or owners manuals,
I have them all in the English version. Just let me know. All I would ask is
for postage.

You bet. Any member of a list can send a message to:

majordomo@list.sirius.com

saying:

who benelli-motobi
or
who benelli-motobi-digest

It will probably only let you get a list of members for the version
of the list you are on though. I've got it limited to list members
to keep spammers from getting a list of email addresses - at least
they have to successfully subscribe before requesting the list.

I've already uns#bscribed (and I modified that command word so
majordomo doesn't pick it up and bounce the message to me as an
admin request - keep this in mind for the future) one person who has
a full mailbox. Generally, I'll let people ride for a day or two of
bounced list traffic since servers do go up and down sometimes.
However, a full mailbox will get you axed right away.

So if you are going to be away for a while, and there is a chance
your mailbox will overflow, uns%b yourself and then ask me about
getting the digests for that time period when you return and have
your email sorted out again.

Cheers,

I personally know Mac. He's a really good guy, honest and lots of
help. He has alot of NOS stuff, much of it, old Cosmo stock. Cosmo was
the only US importer for Benelli...in fact, Cosmo is where Eraldo
Ferraci first came to the US (sent by Benelli) to "rework" newly
imported Benellis that were in marginal condition, right from the
shipping crate.

Anyway....Mac has plenty of stuff..most for Motobi and small Benelli
stuff. I picked up a $75 swap meet late 60's Wards badge Benelli that
needed cables, levers (smalll stuff) and Mac had all the stuff I
needed. This is a side job for him....not his primary imcome.....which
means he doesn't need to rake people to make his bills.

Overlander lists stainless exhaust systems for lot of Italian bikes,
including the Tornado ($325 for the pipes, $525 for mufflers). They
also have tank and side cover badges for the Sei.
They're at http://www.dropbears.com/bikes/o/overlander

That sounds really expensive, but considering how many Tornados there
are out there and how many other parts are available for the bike I
can't complain too much. My Tornado has holes rusted in the mufflers,
but they're not too much louder than stock with the holes, so I can
be a cheapskate a while longer.

Classic Bike had a write up on one. I have it at home. I can fax you a copy,
or send you the date of the mag. Which ever you prefer.. I do recall a
teenage
discussion about them with some friends, that went along the lines of "why
wouldn't you just buy a Bonnie or a Lightning ?". I was having trouble
keeping
oil in the pressed tin primary drive cover of my AJS 500 single at the time,
while
having to regularly lube the auto advance/retard unit on the magneto, to
preserve
the nerve endings in the sole of my foot.

I knew why...

Hello All,
My name is Sean Cahill, and yes, I am a Benalliholic.
I purchased in less than poor condition, a Benelli 650 Tornado with the intent
of an easy to do restoration. After all, the bike was only about twenty years
old. Parts should be easy to find. Right? I chose it because my first bike was
Italian, a Gilera, and I am married to an Italian, so it was easy to get the
project by her as being something of ethnic interest. It has turned into a
labor of love though. I read whatever I can find about the mark, and have met
some wonderful new friends in my search for information and parts. At present,
I only have some re-chroming to do, and along with some new tires, the Tornado
should be ready by spring. I am very anxious. I have never ridden a Benelli
before. I only saw one Tornado twenty some years ago at a bike shop for sale.
So I won't be passing any on the street around here I'm sure.
As far as other bikes, I have a Harley-Davidson Wide Glide, a 78 Kawasaki
Z1-R, and an old Rickman-Zundapp that I will restore when the Benelli is on
the road again.
Looking forward to seeing letters from everyone else. Take care, and I am
sure it will be a great pleasure to be involved in this list.

There weren't a lot of road tests done on the Tornado - I can recall
one by Cycle World (the bike might have even been on the cover), and
I think there was also one by Cycle. I'll try to keep my eyes open
as I shuffle through the heaps of paper and see what else I can find
on the bike. I think that Classic Bike/Mechanic/whatever also had an
article on the 650 within the last year or so.

That sorted out the digest headers. If you guys got the intro files
I think I'm going to presume everything is running good enough to
start announcing the new list on all the other lists.

Oh yes, my engines from Australia should be getting to the US pretty
soon - they were shipped before I went to Spain two weeks ago.

cheers,

Hello Scott,

was this to me or Patois? We've both got Benelli/MotoBi horizontal
singles, though Patois is one up on me by actually having his run.

Things seem to be OK now - I'm going to send out the new list
announcement next thing.

Sorry again, it is for Patois...I seem to have a problem here with email,
for every one I send I am receiving 5 back addressed to myself, plus
adresses are getting switched around. Had the kids over the other night
screwing around in AOL doing email stuff, guess i shouldn't have let them do
that. My apologies......

Scott,

I'm shocked, shocked I say that you could have any kind of email
problems with AOL.

Just keep in mind that everyone subscribed to the list (soon to
number in the hundreds no doubt) will get a copy of any message sent
to the list. So if you are responding to a particular message or
person via the list you'll need to make sure that either the subject
line or the message makes it clear what/who you are referring to.

The other general bit of list netiquette is to trim down quoted text
in a reply message. Some people will quote a multi-screen message
and put "me too" at the bottom, which is a quick way to get a bunch
of angry email from multiple members of the list.

You'll get the hang of it quick enough. I do send out periodic
reminder messages (every month or so) to my lists just to keep people
on the ball about any sloppy habits they've picked up (or no one
every mentioned to them weren't the best of all possible behaviours).

Thanks,
Michael

shocked is a minor word I think I may have used. Deciphering this now,
found a few things, I'll see if I send this with a return of many....

Question,
when posting to the list, should I just delete all mesages under what my
message will be, so there isn't 10 pages full of email reposted? New to
this list stuff, always read the stuff before, never listed till the other
day on euro-moto, boy, you are right, got some NASTY emails back for that
one. Guy last night would've beat me up I think, if he were here. wont do
that again....

I'll give an update now and then as more people trickle onto the

Hello Ray,

There isn't a lot to be found on Benelli/MotoBi. I've got a copy of
Mick Walker's "Benelli", a soft cover book, but haven't seen much
else. It doesn't have much on the MotoBi marque, and I wouldn't be
surprised if it contains more than one or two errors, since that
isn't uncommon in some of MWs other books. He's done two similar
style books on Aermacchi and Morini too.

If people want to start putting together a list of articles on the
two marques I'll be glad to add them to the MotoBi articles I've got
listed on the website (when I get time).

Cheers,
Michael

Scott and Patois,

did you receive the intro files when you subscribed? A copy should
have been sent automatically to you.

I had a letter left out of the _X-SUBJECTS_ command to make the
headers appear at the top of the digest. These computers are so
picky.

My last message came through fine to me, and did show the Ben/MotoBi
prefix on the subject line.

This thing may actually be working properly. I'll have to kick out a
digest to make sure that is doing OK too.

The first day or so will be kind of a waste as we slowly get people
subscribing, so you might save all the important comments for a bit.
